A Civilian Career for Military Journalists

Did you work as a writer in the service? If you worked in any of the journalism-related positions in the service, you might want to consider building a career as a civilian writer. As a service member, you have a very unique set of experiences that you can translate into criticism and commentary on military issues, perhaps in the form of a column.
Skills You'll Need
A good columnist is able to talk about specific issues in a critical manner. He or she is also able to speak to a reader in a way that is inclusive and thought-provoking. Some of the most famous columnists never shy away from tough issues. Columnists also research topics extensively before they write about them. Spelling, punctuation, and grammar skills are a must.
How You Can Prepare
You probably have many of the writing skills you need, and you also have a unique and experienced perspective as a service member. Though it is not required, most columnists have degrees in English, journalism or communications. Some have other degrees that inform their area of expertise. If you do not have a degree, completing a degree program is a wonderful way to build your vocabulary, strengthen your writing skills, and enhance your knowledge of any number of subjects about which you'll one day write.
Tuition Assistance and the GI Bill
The military can help you prepare for this career. You can complete coursework leading to a traditional degree, or even an online degree, using the tuition assistance program of your service branch, or by using your Montgomery GI Bill once you leave the service. Take advantage of a free education and prepare for your future simultaneously.
